Bitcoin - The Currency of the Internet

A community dedicated to Bitcoin, the currency of the Internet. Bitcoin is a distributed, worldwide, decentralized digital money. Bitcoins are issued and managed without any central authority whatsoever: there is no government, company, or bank in charge of Bitcoin. You might be interested in Bitcoin if you like cryptography, distributed peer-to-peer systems, or economics. A large percentage of Bitcoin enthusiasts are libertarians, though people of all political philosophies are welcome.

Is it fine to purchase goods with bitcoins?

I am a student in 2nd yr msc and new to this. I need to order some medications online and most of the sites are asking for bitcoin payment but I am not sure whether it's legal in the US or I may end up in trouble. Any inputs would be great.
Thanks

Full time college student with no income, do I need to file taxes if I purchased goods with bitcoin?

Hello /legaladvice,
I am currently a student and recently used coinbase to purchase bitcoin and purchase some goods. I figured it was okay but I have been reading about how bitcoin is considered "property" and I would need file taxes regardless if I gain, lose, or buy goods with bitcoin.
If I need to pay taxes for this but I don't have any source of income, where should I start?
For the next tax year, would I just only need to worry about filing taxes for the bitcoin I bought? I did not spend very much on coinbase and it seems like they will only report to the IRS if I "trade" more than 20,000 (I've bought less than 200 dollars worth of bitcoin) but I want to do this properly.
Thank you!

Why will non-bitcoin-enthusiasts ever jump through hoops to purchase goods with bitcoin?

I've been itching to discuss bitcoin with anybody that's willing to hold a conversation on the subject, so I was chomping at the bit when I found out my tech-savy brother-in-law was going to be at our holiday get-together (super-overuse-of-hyphens). I asked him, casually, what he thought of bitcoin, and he responded with an extended pause, and tilted his head towards the ceiling as he thought up his answer. He responded with "Hmmm, I wanted some VPN software online and they offered payment with bitcoin, so I figured I'd try it out. There was no payment calculator or easy way to convert my credit card to bitcoin so I just used my card."
This made me think, deeply, about bitcoin. If your average tech enthusiast isn't willing to jump through the fairly minimal hoops to obtain bitcoin for online purchases, then Joe-Amazon definitely won't. What's the incentive for non bitcoin enthusiasts?

More likely to purchase goods with Bitcoin?

We just started accepting bitcoin on our website, and I'm curious if you are MORE likely to make a purchase if the option to pay with bitcoin is available. Another redditor told us to accept bitcoin.
I sell a unique product, (Get Up and Go ) caffeinated cookies and granola, and have a lot of fun tech people who enjoy it, so we figure we might as well give it a shot.
Excited to hear your feedback :).

What’s the best apps to purchase bitcoin from with good rates and 0 ID required?

Have got BlueWallet and brd but wondering if there’s any others. Would also prefer a low minimum purchase but shouldn’t matter to much (thanks in advance)

I’m new to bitcoins. I live in the USA . I recently brought $20 dollars worth of bitcoins through Cash-app. My 1st question is this amount worth anything? My 2nd question is where can I purchase goods or pay bills with bitcoins? I want to purchase goods that I can use myself and save some for later.

For Bitcoin, the Square Cash App 1099 doesn't report basis or include purchases of goods

What is the deal with Square's 1099 forms?
  1. For Bitcoin sales, they don't report basis, just total proceeds. Tax is based on capital gains, not total sales. So if you want to do it right, they've sent incomplete info to the IRS.
  2. If you purchase goods with Bitcoin, everything I've found online states you're supposed to report capital gains, as if you just sold the Bitcoin. Square doesn't include this, so again, if you want to do things right, they've sent incomplete info to the IRS.
I've been keeping track of everything in Excel, and I'm able to compute the basis and report purchased goods, but I'm unsure how to proceed given what Square has done. What to do?

Been HODLing Bitcoin for like 2 years. Finally made my first real world purchase with Bitcoin BCH, and god damn did it feel good.

I don't think I've ever been so satisfied by a purchase before. It kinda sux that the vendor only accepts Bitcoin BTC directly; Bitcoin BCH and all other cryptocurrencies were processed through a third party. The third party required a name and email, but didn't actually verify it, so I just gave a fake name and email to that third party so I could remain anonymous.
But the feeling of actually spending my Bitcoin as money was unbelievably empowering. I highly recommend anyone HODLing Bitcoin as just a passive investor, to get out there and actively search for ways to spend it in the real-world and use it for its actually-intended purpose. Also lets try to get more merchants to accept Bitcoin BCH directly as well, by spending as much BCH as we can to let the market know we want to spend BCH because we trust its speed and fees.

No, I didn't. The values of everyone's dollar goes down equally, with the banks get a lot new money. The reason why the value of everyone's money goes down is because the new money joins the old money in purchasing available goods and so on, driving prices up. As a result, banks get richer, people get poorer.
I'm going to ask you one more time. How come the super rich become even richer with the stimulation that comes from inflation?
In fact, there wasn't any super rich people 50~100 years ago. It's the concentration of money, which is caused by inflation in the first place, that created the super rich.

Just curious, how many people have purchased a legal good or service this week with bitcoin.
Bonus question: Was that good or service priced in bitcoin or another currency?
